Germany experiences extreme low water levels in 2025/26

An evaluation by the Science Media Center reveals that German rivers experienced extremely low water levels for several months during the 2025/26 hydrological year. Data from the Low Water Information System (NIWIS) indicates that nine major river basins in Germany were characterized by low water levels.

In January 2026, approximately one-fifth of river discharges were classified as ‘very low’ or ‘extremely low’. This proportion increased to 35 percent during August and September. These classifications are based on comparisons with discharge values from the period between 1991 and 2020.

The hydrological year, which ends on October 31, saw significant deficits in soil, groundwater, and river levels. Experts attribute these conditions to climate change, as well as the straightening and deepening of rivers. While low water on the Rhine was historically a winter phenomenon caused by ice and snow, current trends show a shift toward heat- and drought-related summer low water levels. Additionally, southern Germany experienced extreme drought during the summer, following a winter that was drier than normal.
