Germany faces new payment mandates and energy price volatility

Germany is preparing for significant shifts in consumer costs and payment regulations. The federal government plans to introduce a mandate by 2027 that would prohibit 'cash only' signs, requiring businesses to offer alternative payment methods. This move aims to address tax revenue losses and consumer frustration in sectors where cash is currently the primary medium.

In the energy sector, heating oil prices have experienced extreme volatility. After reaching a record high of 177.58 euros per 100 liters in mid-September 2026, prices have seen a slight decline to approximately 168.24 euros. However, experts warn that geopolitical tensions in Iran and Ukraine continue to threaten price stability as winter approaches.

Additionally, the ADAC has criticized current fuel pricing regulations. A rule implemented in April, which limits price increases at gas stations to once per day at noon, has reportedly led to larger price gaps. Data shows that Super E10 and diesel prices jump significantly at midday, causing higher costs for drivers unable to time their refueling flexibly.
