Germany faces perceived division despite similar regional values
A new study by smart insights GmbH regarding the Day of German Unity reveals that many Germans perceive their country as divided. Only 10.7 percent of respondents consider Germany to be united, while 50.4 percent feel the nation is not united. Despite this perceived lack of cohesion, the study notes that views between East and West Germans are often similar; differences in priorities regarding freedom, security, tradition, and sustainability typically fall within a three percent margin.
In Bremen, the “Ostwesträume” initiative is hosting a workshop titled “Ostwesträume – Begegnen. Zuhören. Verstehen” on October 4. Organized by Katharina Göring and Carmen Krettek, the project aims to foster dialogue between individuals with East and West German biographies. The goal is to promote mutual understanding, reflect on collective experiences, and address existing narratives and prejudices to contribute to democratic discourse.
