East-West economic and political disparities in Germany

Overview

Societal and economic disparities between East and West Germany remain a significant issue decades after reunification. A study by smart insights GmbH indicates a perceived lack of national cohesion, with only 10.7 percent of respondents considering Germany to be united. Economic data highlights a persistent and widening wealth gap. While previous observations noted differences in income and pensions, recent data from the Federal Statistical Office shows the income gap is increasing. In 2025, average monthly gross earnings in western states were 4,961 euros, compared to 4,121 euros in the east. The net household income gap has also widened, with eastern households having approximately 7,247 euros less available annually than those in the west. Wealth distribution remains highly unequal; 95 percent of tax-relevant wealth transfers occurred in the west. An analysis by the Institute of the German Economy (IW) indicates that the East’s economic catch-up process has stalled, with eastern economic output hovering between 78 and 79 percent of western levels since 2020. Deficits are notable in research and development, where eastern personnel reach only 46 percent of western levels, and in capital stock, which has seen stagnant growth for 15 years. Politically, these disparities influence voter behavior, with the AfD emerging as a dominant force in eastern states like Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Reports from the Berliner Zeitung suggest a growing political divide and a sense of disenfranchisement. This is attributed to a perceived lack of agency, as the dominance of West German elites and companies fosters a feeling that decisions are made by outsiders. Historical privatization processes via the Treuhandanstalt agency resulted in the loss of 2.6 million out of 4.1 million jobs, with 80 percent of enterprises going to West Germans.
