Germany: Persistent economic and social divides between East and West

Thirty-six years after German reunification, significant economic and social disparities persist between the eastern and western states. Data from the Federal Statistical Office for 2025 shows an average monthly gross wage of 4,961 euros in the west compared to 4,121 euros in the east. Furthermore, wealth transfer remains heavily skewed, with 95 percent of taxable wealth transfers occurring in the west.

Research from the Institute of the German Economy (IW) indicates that the economic convergence of the east has stalled. Since 2020, the eastern states' economic output has fluctuated between 78 and 79 percent of the western level, failing to reach the 80 percent mark. Deficits are particularly notable in research and development, where eastern personnel reach only 46 percent of western levels. Additionally, the capital stock in the east has seen little growth for 15 years.

Socially, the divide continues to influence politics. The rise of the AfD in eastern states like Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is linked by some analysts to feelings of being left behind and a lack of political representation in central constitutional organs. Meanwhile, political figures like Elisabeth Kaiser have called for more eastern representation in high-level leadership, such as the presidency, to address these perceived imbalances.
