Germany faces rising cost-of-living pressures and consumer debt

Economic pressures are mounting for many households in Germany as high costs for housing, energy, food, and mobility persist. Data from Schufa indicates that the proportion of consumers experiencing payment disruptions rose to 8.1 percent in 2025, alongside an increase in private insolvencies. This financial instability is dampening consumer confidence, particularly ahead of the Christmas shopping season, as many households prioritize essential spending over discretionary purchases.

Students are facing particularly acute challenges. Statistics show that 80 percent of students living alone and 70 percent of those in shared apartments fall below the statistical poverty line. High rents, with shared rooms averaging 512 euros, consume a significant portion of student income.

Furthermore, proposed government pension reforms that would make 'minijobs' subject to full pension insurance could exacerbate the situation. For a job paying 603 euros, students could see a monthly reduction of approximately 120 euros in take-home pay, further straining budgets already stretched between rent and basic necessities.
