Germany financial literacy education debate
Overview
Debates regarding financial literacy education in Germany have intensified following the release of new educational resources. The portal Kredit-Daten launched free modules covering topics such as budgeting, inflation, and debt prevention to assist schools and families. This initiative has reignited political friction over whether financial education is a parental responsibility or a school mandate, with critics arguing that relying on home environments favors privileged families.
Recent survey data from GOLD. DE, released alongside the 2026 ‘Day of Gold’, underscores these concerns by highlighting significant knowledge gaps among 1,000 young adults aged 16 to 35. The study found that only 33.5 percent of respondents passed a basic financial test, while approximately 32 percent could answer at most one of three basic questions correctly. Specific weaknesses were identified in inflation awareness—where only 52.2 percent knew the current German inflation rate—and risk diversification. While 74.9 percent understood the difference between gross and net salary, one in four lacked clarity on specific payroll deductions. Korbinian G. Penzkofer, Managing Director of ADEOS MEDIA GmbH, emphasized that financial education is crucial for long-term economic security and cautioned against relying solely on social media for financial information.
In response to these challenges, educational initiatives are expanding. In Germany, the company Dr. Jordan is launching a seminar titled ‘Financial Education for Youth and Young Adults’ on October 20, 2026, covering practical topics such as budgeting, debt avoidance, investing in stocks and ETFs, insurance, and tax returns.
