Germany battles extreme heatwave and worsening drought
A severe heatwave is sweeping parts of western Germany. In the Oberrhein region temperatures are forecast to reach 40 °C or higher, with the hottest day expected on Thursday. The German Weather Service warns that the extreme heat raises the risk of wildfires, especially in the Saarland, where temperatures of 30 °C are already expected and the 40 °C threshold could be broken. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly and ill are urged to stay cool and hydrated.
In central Germany, the state of Hessen is experiencing unusually low soil moisture. DWD measurements show the top 60 cm of ground is far drier than typical for midsummer, and experts say a month‑long rain event would be needed to alleviate the situation, which is not foreseen.
The neighbouring town of Duderstadt (Lower Saxony) reports that the Hahle river no longer carries water and the Brehme stream’s flow is minimal. To protect water quality in local ponds, the city has temporarily disconnected the Brehme’s inlet on Marktstraße. Officials say the water shortage will likely continue for weeks because recent rain has been insufficient to refill the source aquifers.
