Germany approves fuel tax relief to lower gasoline and diesel prices

The German Bundestag and Bundesrat have approved a new fuel tax relief measure to combat rising energy costs. From October 1 until the end of December, the energy tax on diesel and gasoline will be reduced by 14.04 cents per liter. When including VAT, consumers can expect a total reduction of approximately 17 cents per liter at the pump.

The measure is expected to cost the federal government and the states a combined total of approximately 2.5 billion euros, with the costs to be shared equally between the federal and state levels. This relief is intended to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

While the coalition government views this as a necessary tool for immediate relief, the decision has faced criticism from opposition parties and environmental groups. Critics argue the measure is not sufficiently targeted toward low-income households and may fail to ensure that oil companies pass the full savings on to consumers. Additionally, authorities are considering the introduction of a fuel price cap by January 1, 2027.
