Germany gas storage levels drop to 50 percent amid winter supply concerns
Germany's natural gas storage levels have reached approximately 50.25 percent, a figure significantly lower than in previous years and below the European average. This decline has prompted Federal Economic Minister Katherina Reiche to activate the early warning stage of the gas emergency plan to ensure supply security.
Experts from Argus Media warn that to reach the target filling level of approximately 70 percent by early November, Germany must inject nearly three times the daily average of gas seen over the last three years. Current market conditions, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and competition for LNG with Asian buyers, have driven European gas prices to their highest levels since early 2023.
In response to the situation, the state of Saxony has called for federal intervention and the establishment of a national strategic gas reserve. Additionally, the FDP political party has proposed expanding domestic gas production, including the use of fracking, and seeking new international energy partnerships to mitigate high costs and supply risks.
