Germany gas storage levels hit 15-year low amid winter supply fears

Germany's natural gas storage levels have reached a 15-year low, sitting at approximately 54% as of early September. The industry association Initiative Energien Speichern (INES) warns that if the upcoming winter is exceptionally cold, similar to 2010, storage levels could be completely depleted by February.

While a normal or warm winter would likely allow existing supplies to suffice, the current filling pace is insufficient to meet the legal target of 80% by November 1. Experts suggest a maximum fill level of 77% is technically possible, but reaching it requires a significant increase in daily injection rates.

The slow filling is attributed to economic factors; high gas prices, influenced by conflicts in the Middle East, have reduced the financial incentive for traders to buy and store gas during the summer. INES has called for government intervention, including the removal of storage fees and subsidies, to encourage replenishment.

Public sentiment reflects these concerns. A Forsa survey indicates that 44% of Germans fear gas shortages for households and businesses this winter, with higher levels of concern reported in East Germany and among supporters of the AfD party.
