Germany gas storage levels hit historic lows ahead of winter
German natural gas storage levels have reached a significant low, sitting at approximately 50.71 percent as of late August 2026. This figure is notably lower than the European average of 62.99 percent and represents a historic low for this period in Germany.
While the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) maintains that the gas supply remains stable due to pipelines and LNG imports, industry experts and associations have raised alarms. The VDMA, representing the mechanical engineering industry, expressed concern that low reserves could lead to supply shortages or price spikes that threaten industrial processes. Additionally, experts warned that low storage levels could create physical delivery issues during extreme cold periods, as gas flow from depleted reservoirs can slow down.
Geopolitical tensions, including concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, are contributing to rising wholesale gas prices. Despite these concerns, the German government has declined to implement emergency state purchases, maintaining that winter preparedness is the responsibility of market participants and traders.
