Germany gas storage levels trigger industrial supply warnings

Natural gas storage levels in Germany have reached a critical low, prompting warnings from industrial sectors regarding potential supply shortages in the upcoming winter. As of late August 2026, German gas storage levels stood at approximately 52.63 percent, a figure significantly lower than both previous years and the European average of roughly 64.73 percent.

The VDMA, an association representing over 3,000 mechanical and plant engineering companies, has issued an alarm regarding the slow replenishment of these reserves. Thilo Brodtmann, the VDMA's managing director, noted that the industry is increasingly concerned about supply bottlenecks. He emphasized that natural gas is essential for critical industrial processes, such as metal heat treatment and foundry work, which cannot be easily transitioned to alternative energy sources.

Industry leaders are calling on suppliers, wholesalers, and the government to take responsibility for ensuring energy security to prevent physical gas shortages or extreme price volatility.
