Germany: GdB 50 disability rating does not guarantee bank fee exemption

In Germany, a Grade of Disability (GdB) of 50 or higher qualifies a person as severely disabled and provides various statutory benefits such as exemption from the public broadcasting fee, free public‑transport tickets, additional vacation days, tax relief and other allowances. However, there is no legal entitlement to waive bank account maintenance fees; the amount charged is at the discretion of each bank. Individuals can still obtain fee‑free accounts by comparing offers or negotiating directly with their bank.

A 2024 analysis of cases in Baden‑Württemberg shows that roughly one‑quarter of appeals against an initial GdB assessment are successful, often after new medical evidence is presented. Appeals must be lodged within four weeks of the decision, with the possibility of further court action if necessary. Successful appeals can raise the rating to 50 or higher, thereby unlocking the associated benefits.
