Skilled German Workers Shift Abroad to Austria and Switzerland

A growing number of highly qualified German professionals are leaving Germany for neighboring Austria and Switzerland. A personal‑consultant family described how soaring housing prices, high investment risk and cumbersome administrative procedures made establishing a medical practice in Germany unfeasible. In Austria they found lower real‑estate costs, more transparent and digitalised public services, and a higher quality of life, noting that “private and professional motives are hard to separate in long‑term decisions”.

Statistical data underline the trend: at the end of 2024 roughly 325,000 German citizens lived in Switzerland, making Germans the second‑largest foreign group after Italians. German migrants are over‑represented in academic, health‑care and engineering occupations. Switzerland offers higher gross median wages (about CHF 6,788 per month), a very low unemployment rate (2.4 % in 2024) and a stable economy, although living costs are also higher. Both countries provide quicker administrative processes, more predictable tax regimes and easier access to business‑friendly environments, attracting German entrepreneurs and skilled workers seeking better investment conditions.
