Germany Halts Automatic Temporary Protection for Ukrainian Conscription-Age Men

German interior minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that Germany will stop automatically granting temporary protection to Ukrainian men fleeing military conscription. The new rule applies only to newcomers aged 23 to 60; men already residing in Germany will not be affected. Under the policy, applicants must undergo the regular asylum procedure and will be denied protection if they lack other grounds for refuge.

The change follows an EU Council decision to end such automatic protection from March 2027, reflecting Ukraine's evolving defence needs. Germany currently hosts about 1.35 million Ukrainian refugees, including roughly 356 000 men of military‑age. Dobrindt said avoiding service cannot be a basis for asylum, linking the move to Germany's substantial financial and military support for Ukraine. Other EU states, such as the Czech Republic and Denmark, are also tightening rules for Ukrainian men of conscription age.
