Germany health insurance additional contribution rate to remain stable in 2027

The GKV-Schätzerkreis (GKV Estimating Circle) has projected that the average additional contribution rate for Germany's statutory health insurance will remain stable at 2.9 percent in 2027. Health Minister Carsten Linnemann attributed this stability to the GKV Contribution Rate Stabilization Act (GKV-BStabG), which is expected to reduce health insurance expenditures by up to 15 billion euros next year.

Despite the projected stability of the average rate, experts and political figures warn of underlying financial risks. While the average remains unchanged, individual health insurance funds may still increase rates for their members based on their specific financial situations. The SPD has welcomed the news as a positive signal for employees and employers, though they noted that consolidation needs for 2027 have risen to 18.8 billion euros.

Other sectors of the social security system face different pressures. The AOK Federal Association warned of a potential financing gap in long-term care insurance by summer 2027, despite recent government loans. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the use of health data by insurance companies without explicit consent, as many insured individuals remain unaware of current data processing regulations.
