Germany heating market sees surge in heat pump sales

The German heating market saw significant growth in the first half of 2026, driven primarily by a surge in heat pump installations. According to data from the German Heating Industry Association (BDH), 352,000 heating units were sold between January and June, representing a 19 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Heat pump sales rose by 40 percent to 194,500 units, making them the most significant growth driver and accounting for more than half of the total market. In contrast, gas-based heating sales remained relatively stable with a 1 percent increase (134,000 units), while oil-based heating saw an 11 percent decline (9,500 units) and biomass heating decreased by 1 percent (14,000 units).

Despite the rise in heat pump demand, industry experts note that the market still needs more momentum to meet climate goals. Approximately 4 million heating systems in Germany are over 30 years old, and more than 40 percent of the nation's 21.5 million heating systems do not meet current technical standards. Industry representatives emphasized the need for long-term, reliable regulatory frameworks and subsidies to ensure investment security for consumers and planning certainty for companies.
