Central Europe experiences extreme weather and seasonal shifts

Central Europe is experiencing significant weather shifts as September concludes. In Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia recorded its latest heatwave on September 30, with Lippstadt reaching 30.9 degrees Celsius. This marks a new milestone for the region, which saw a record 23 hot days in 2026, far exceeding the long-term average of eight.

Austria also reported extreme conditions. GeoSphere Austria noted that September was the 14th warmest in 260 years, with temperatures in Pottschach reaching 34.7 degrees. Despite some rainfall, a significant precipitation deficit remains across much of the country. In the Salzkammergut region, temperatures frequently exceeded 30 degrees, though the month ended with a notable dry spell.

In Italy, an Omega-block weather pattern is providing stable, warm conditions, with temperatures expected to reach 29 degrees through early October. However, this period of warmth coincides with a planned wave of strikes affecting transport, schools, and ports throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Czechia is enjoying a warm “Indian summer” with temperatures up to 25 degrees, though meteorologists warn of potential high winds in northern regions. As October begins, Germany expects a transition from initial warmth and potential heavy rain to cooler, more autumnal weather by mid-month.
