41‑Year‑Old Man Arrested After Attempted Arson in Austria’s Styria

On the afternoon of 18 July 2026 a 41‑year‑old man tried to set his neighbour’s house on fire in the municipality of Grafendorf near Hartberg, Styria. He had placed gasoline around the building, but the homeowner noticed the attempt and stopped it. The suspect fled in his car, first onto the A2 south‑motorway and then onto the S4 Mattersburg expressway toward Burgenland.

Police launched a multi‑regional manhunt involving units from Styria, Lower Austria and Burgenland as well as several police helicopters. At about 18:45 local time a patrol car intercepted the suspect on a field road near the village of Sigleß in the Mattersburg district. He was taken into custody without resistance and is now being held pending investigation. No injuries were reported, and investigators suspect a neighbour dispute may have motivated the arson attempt. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Styria State Criminal Police Office.
