Germany implements GKV health insurance reforms

Germany is implementing significant reforms to its statutory health insurance (GKV) system through the GKV Contribution Rate Stabilization Act. Passed by the Bundestag and effective as of July 30, 2026, the law aims to consolidate insurance finances but will result in increased costs for insured individuals starting in 2027.

Key changes include higher out-of-pocket expenses: medication co-payments will rise from a range of 5 to 10 euros to between 7.50 and 15 euros, and daily hospital co-payments will increase from 10 to 15 euros. Additionally, subsidies for dental prosthetics will decrease, and cannabis flowers will no longer be reimbursed by insurance providers. The reform also introduces stricter budget constraints in outpatient care.

In response to the evolving landscape, the IKK Brandenburg and Berlin (IKK BB) has been active in addressing healthcare challenges. The organization has advocated for reforms to prevent the one-sided burdening of contributors and has filed legal action regarding the underfunding of healthcare for social security recipients. IKK BB also recently approved its 2026 budget, maintaining a stable supplementary contribution rate.
