Germany implements new military service model for 2026

Germany is implementing a new military service model for 2026 that prioritizes voluntary participation. Under the new system, males aged 18 and older (born from 2008 onwards) are required to complete an online questionnaire regarding their fitness, skills, and interests. While the service is primarily voluntary, lasting between 6 and 23 months, the state may implement a mandatory lottery-based system for men if voluntary recruitment levels are insufficient.

This shift has led to a significant increase in demand for counseling services regarding military service and conscientious objection. German churches, including various Protestant regional churches and the Catholic organization pax christi, report rising numbers of young people seeking guidance. The Bavarian Evangelical Lutheran Church estimates a nearly threefold increase in inquiries compared to the previous year.

Many individuals seeking counseling are specifically looking for support with the application process for conscientious objection. As of July 31, there have been 8,302 applications for conscientious objection filed this year. The increased interest is attributed to heightened discussions regarding Germany's defense capabilities and the perceived threat of war following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
