Germany implements new solar energy models for industry and non-profits

New solar energy initiatives in Germany are demonstrating diverse economic and social models for the renewable transition. In Kamp-Lintfort, the Leucht project by Kronos Solar Projects GmbH is moving away from traditional state subsidies (EEG) toward a direct marketing model. This approach utilizes Power Purchase Agreements to sell electricity directly to large industrial consumers, providing long-term price stability for businesses and a stable revenue model for operators. The project also integrates battery storage to manage grid stability and capitalize on market price fluctuations.

In Bonn, a different model is being piloted by the Munich-based startup Solation. In collaboration with property owner Patrizia and technology partner SolarEdge, the project involves a commercial building where surplus solar power is donated to local non-profit organizations. This represents the first model of its kind in Germany, using a ‘virtual battery’ concept to manage electricity distribution. Solation is currently seeking a non-profit recipient located within a 4.5 km radius of the building to receive the donated power via the grid.
