Germany implements phased driver's license exchange

Germany is undergoing a large-scale project to exchange approximately 42 million driver's licenses to ensure they meet European Union standards for uniformity and forgery protection. The process is being implemented in stages, with specific deadlines based on the year the license was issued.

According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, licenses issued in 1999, 2000, and 2001 were required to be exchanged by January 19, 2026. The entire transition is scheduled to be completed by January 19, 2033. As part of the new regulations, licenses will be valid for 15 years before requiring another exchange. An exception applies to individuals born before 1953, who must exchange their licenses by the final 2033 deadline regardless of the issuance year.
