Germany imposes major road closures on B481 and A31 in July 2026
From 20 July 2026 the federal road B481 between Greven and Emsdetten in North‑Westphalia will be fully closed for an estimated 16 weeks. The closure enables the complete renewal of three bridge structures and a comprehensive road‑surface reconstruction, after which the route will operate with a 2+1 lane configuration. Traffic will be detoured via the B219 and B475, with temporary traffic lights installed on the diversion route.
Separately, a slope fire on the A31 near Meppen has prompted a secondary full closure of that highway. Emergency services responded to the incident, and the closure is intended to ensure safety while the fire is extinguished and the roadway inspected.
Both closures are expected to increase travel times for commuters and freight traffic in the affected regions, prompting authorities to advise drivers to use alternative routes and plan for longer journeys.
