German startups see record growth driven by AI and defense

The German startup sector is experiencing a surge in growth driven by artificial intelligence and defense technology. According to the Deutsche Startup Monitor 2026, approximately eight billion euros in venture capital flowed into startups by the end of September, surpassing the total for the previous year.

This growth has led to a record 39 unicorns in Germany, with ten new billion-dollar companies emerging this year alone. Notable companies include Trade Republic, N26, and Personio, alongside new additions like Osapiens, Neura Robotics, and Stark Defense. AI has become a central component of the industry, with 53 percent of surveyed growth companies centering their products around the technology.

Despite this momentum, challenges remain. While capital is concentrating at the top, the number of financing rounds in the broader market has decreased compared to 2021. Additionally, there is a heavy reliance on US investors, and 62 percent of startups consider going public in the United States rather than Germany.
