Germany industrial production falls 1.1% in July

German industrial production fell unexpectedly by 1.1% in July compared to June, according to data from Destatis. This decline was primarily driven by a 9.2% drop in the automotive sector, which the VDA attributed to multi-week production pauses. When excluding the energy and construction sectors, industrial production saw a sharper decline of 2.2%.

Specific sub-sectors also experienced downturns, with capital goods production falling by 3.4% and consumer goods production decreasing by 2.2%. Conversely, the energy sector provided a positive offset, with production increasing by 4.7%, largely due to higher output from wind and solar power. Construction production saw a slight increase of 0.9%.

Despite the industrial contraction, Germany's trade surplus expanded to 21.3 billion euros in July, as imports fell more rapidly than exports. While exports to the US grew significantly, declines in shipments to China and the UK weighed on the overall balance. Additionally, the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research (IWH) noted that while corporate insolvencies decreased slightly in August, they remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, signaling ongoing economic fragility.
