German labor market trends and demographics
Overview
Germany's labor market is undergoing structural shifts driven by demographic changes and evolving recruitment practices. Employment growth has been largely fueled by foreign-born workers, including refugees and EU nationals, as the native working-age population declines.
Recent data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) highlights significant contractions in specific sectors, notably the automotive industry, which reached its lowest employment level since 2005 with 691,500 workers by mid-2026. This 5.8 percent annual decline, representing a loss of 42,300 jobs, is particularly sharp among parts and accessories suppliers, who experienced a 7.6 percent drop in jobs. Vehicle and engine manufacturers also saw a 6.1 percent decrease. Conversely, a niche sector specializing in trailers, superstructures, and bodies recorded a 10 percent increase in employment.
Major manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have implemented job cuts to reduce costs, while suppliers like Continental, Bosch, and Schaeffler are also heavily impacted. Analysts attribute these declines to high production costs in Germany, weakening demand in the Chinese market, and intense competition from Chinese manufacturers. Since 2019, approximately 16 percent of jobs in the automotive sector have disappeared. The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) has warned of potential long-term job losses of up to 225,000 by 2035.
The broader manufacturing sector has also contracted, with total employment falling by 144,000 positions to 5.29 million. While the automotive industry remains Germany's second-largest industrial employer, it is currently losing jobs faster than any other industrial branch; the mechanical engineering sector remains the largest with 905,900 employees.
