Argentina inflation slows to 1.7% in August FAST-MOVING

Argentina's monthly inflation rate slowed to 1.7% in August, according to INDEC, marking the lowest monthly increase in 14 months. The annual inflation rate stands at 33.5%, while year-to-date inflation has reached 21.3%.

Economic Minister Luis Caputo celebrated the deceleration, noting it is the lowest August rate since 2017. Within the consumer price index, the housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels category saw the highest monthly increase at 2.8%. Regulated prices rose by 2.2%, while seasonal prices fell by 0.9%, with clothing and footwear being the only category to record a decrease of 0.6%. Core inflation was reported at 1.8%.

Despite the cooling inflation, the broader economic landscape remains challenging. Manufacturing industrial production fell 5% in July, and the industrial sector has seen a 2.6% contraction in the first seven months of the year. Additionally, reports from ATE indicate that public sector wages have fallen 40.5% during the current administration, contributing to increased debt among state employees.
