Germany inflation rises to 2.9% in August 2026
Germany's inflation rate rose to 2.9% in August 2026, up from 2.8% in July and 2.3% in June. According to Ruth Brand, President of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), rising energy prices—driven largely by the Iran-Iraq war's impact on the crude oil market—were the primary cause of the increase. Fuel prices surged by 27.7% compared to the previous year, while light heating oil saw a significant increase of 49.6%. Conversely, household energy costs including electricity, natural gas, and district heating saw year-on-year decreases.
In the agricultural sector, producer prices for agricultural products fell by 13.7% in July 2026 compared to July 2025. While prices for plant products dropped by 4.4%—driven by significant decreases in table potatoes and fruit—prices for animals and animal products fell by 18.6%. Specific vegetable prices, such as iceberg lettuce and cucumbers, showed notable increases.
