Germany intelligence law targets vehicle camera data

The German government has passed a new intelligence law that may allow intelligence services to utilize data from vehicle cameras. Under the proposed draft, car manufacturers and repair shops could be obligated to provide information regarding data recorded by vehicle systems.

While modern vehicles are equipped with high-resolution cameras for parking assistance and security features, such as Tesla’s Sentry Mode, these functions are often disabled by users to save energy or due to privacy concerns. The new legislation aims to address the use of this technology for surveillance and criminal investigation, potentially bypassing certain existing data protection restrictions.
