Germany introduces digital vehicle registration with travel restrictions
Germany has launched the i-Kfz application, allowing vehicle owners to access a digital version of their vehicle registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) via mobile devices. While this digital document is legally valid for police checks within German borders, it is not currently recognized for international travel.
The German Federal Ministry of Transport has clarified that drivers traveling to other countries, such as Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, or Bosnia and Herzegovina, must still carry the original paper registration document. Relying solely on the mobile application when crossing borders may lead to issues with foreign authorities.
