Germany digital vehicle registration implementation

Overview

Germany has implemented digital vehicle registration through the i-Kfz-App, allowing users to access a digital version of their registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) on smartphones. This digital document is generated from official registry data and is considered a valid official document for traffic inspections.

While the service has expanded from private holders to include companies and organizations, legal limitations regarding its use have been clarified. Although the digital document is legally valid for police checks within German borders, it is not currently recognized for international travel. The German Federal Ministry of Transport has advised that drivers traveling to countries such as Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, or Bosnia and Herzegovina must still carry the original paper registration document to avoid issues with foreign authorities.
