In Cologne, a specific program designed to provide a perspective for long-term tolerated migrants has come under fire. North Rhine-Westphalia Integration Minister Verena Schäffer reported that of 218 participants from the Western Balkans in 2024, 119 had criminal records. Similarly, 76 out of 153 participants this year were noted for criminal activity.
The Cologne immigration office is under pressure after it was revealed that the city rejected state assistance for preparing deportations, citing its local residency program. The district government has now ordered a comprehensive review of the program, which includes approximately 1,200 participants of various origins, to ensure that offenders are not being included.
