Germany investigates citizenship fraud involving Nazi victim ancestry

German prosecutors are investigating 32 suspects accused of using forged documents to fraudulently obtain citizenship by posing as descendants of individuals persecuted by the Nazi regime. The investigation, led by the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office, targets individuals who allegedly submitted false lineage claims to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne.

The scheme exploits Article 116 of Germany’s Basic Law, a constitutional provision designed to restore citizenship rights to victims of National Socialism and their descendants who were stripped of their nationality between 1933 and 1945. Reports indicate that the majority of the suspects under investigation are from China.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced it will take all necessary steps to uncover fraudulent acts in these restitution processes. Officials expressed regret over the identity theft and the misuse of biographies belonging to actual victims of Nazi persecution. The ministry stated that once sufficient information is gathered, the Federal Office of Administration will immediately initiate revocation proceedings, which could result in the suspects losing their German citizenship.
