Germany, Italy, and Belgium propose EU emergency brake

Leaders from Germany, Italy, and Belgium have proposed the implementation of an ‘emergency brake’ mechanism within the European Union. In a joint letter to European Council President António Costa, Friedrich Merz, Giorgia Meloni, and Bart De Wever requested that member states be granted specific authority to halt new EU legislation if it is deemed to impose excessive burdens on businesses and governments. The goal of this proposal is to improve the competitiveness of European companies and prevent industrial production from relocating outside of Europe.

The leaders are also calling for the European Commission to significantly reduce bureaucracy by simplifying regulatory frameworks, shortening planning and licensing processes, and potentially suspending certain rules temporarily to prioritize specific projects.

In a separate development regarding security, cybersecurity experts from the United States European Command (USEUCOM) visited Iceland in late September. Working alongside the national cybersecurity team CERT-IS, the experts conducted workshops for personnel from the Icelandic Coast Guard, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and other public institutions. The training focused on practical skills for detecting and responding to cyber threats to strengthen Iceland’s administrative cybersecurity capabilities.
