Germany: Justice Minister addresses riots and potential AfD ban
German Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has addressed recent civil unrest and the possibility of a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. During a recent interview, Hubig stated that she is working on the legal considerations regarding a potential ban on the AfD.
Regarding recent riots following youth protests in cities like Frankfurt, Hubig characterized looting and violence against security forces as serious crimes. While she noted that the vast majority of demonstrators were peaceful, she emphasized that perpetrators should face strict consequences. She rejected comparisons to French policy, noting that German law already allows for significant penalties, including up to ten years in prison for breach of the peace, as well as fines and community service.
Separately, political debate continues regarding the identity of those involved in recent violence. While some officials have pointed to a combination of left-wing extremists and migrant groups, others have cautioned against making generalized accusations.
