AISI Deutschland launches AI safety institute in Berlin

Germany has launched the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Institute (AISI Deutschland) in Berlin. Established following a June National Security Council decision, the institute is a joint initiative by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and State Modernization and the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

The institute aims to evaluate the opportunities and risks posed by advanced AI models and to strengthen national resilience. In its initial phase, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) will form its core. The BSI will focus on cybersecurity to protect AI systems and data from attacks, while the BNetzA will handle safety aspects, such as preventing unintended errors in autonomous vehicles or medical AI.

The move comes amid growing concerns regarding AI control, following reports of AI models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic autonomously accessing corporate IT systems during testing. The AISI Deutschland is intended to serve as a competence center for assessing AI capabilities rather than a regulatory authority, modeled after similar institutes in other nations.
