Germany launches massive He Dreiht offshore wind farm

Germany is advancing its transition toward renewable energy with the launch of the ‘He Dreiht’ offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Located approximately 110 kilometers west of the island of Helgoland, the project represents Germany’s largest offshore wind endeavor to date.

Developed by the energy group EnBW with an investment of 2.4 billion euros, the complex consists of 64 wind turbines. The facility has a total capacity of 960 megawatts, making it one of Europe’s largest energy plants. It is estimated that the project can provide renewable energy to approximately 1.1 million households.

This expansion follows Germany’s 2023 decision to decommission its last three nuclear power plants as part of a strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Wind energy has become a cornerstone of the German power system, with onshore and offshore capacities contributing significantly to the nation's electricity production alongside solar power.
