Germany launches new volunteer initiatives for seniors

New initiatives in Germany are expanding opportunities for citizens aged 60 and older to engage in volunteer work and community service.

In Lüneburg, the Freiwilligenagentur Lüneburg is launching the ‘Ehrenamt 60+ im Fokus’ format. Starting September 14, 2026, the program will host meetings between seniors and various organizations, such as the AWO educational mentors and the Paul-Gerhardt-Haus, to facilitate direct exchange and help individuals find roles that match their interests and availability. A workshop titled ‘The Path to Volunteering’ is also scheduled for late September.

In the Düsseldorf and Ratingen regions, Diakonie Düsseldorf is launching the ‘REAL’ project on October 1, 2026. This initiative utilizes the Federal Volunteer Service framework to recruit seniors as ‘encounter pilots’ (Begegnungslotsen). The 12-month program involves 20 hours of work per week across five locations, including Benrath, Garath, Flingern, Derendorf, and Ratingen. Participants receive a monthly allowance of approximately 260 euros and 30 days of vacation, mirroring standard federal volunteer conditions.
