In Lüneburg, the Freiwilligenagentur Lüneburg is launching the ‘Ehrenamt 60+ im Fokus’ format to connect seniors with organizations like AWO educational mentors. Additionally, Diakonie Düsseldorf is launching the ‘REAL’ project on October 1, 2026, in the Düsseldorf and Ratingen regions. This initiative uses the Federal Volunteer Service framework to recruit seniors as ‘encounter pilots’ (Begegnungslotsen), providing them with a monthly allowance and structured hours to facilitate community engagement.

On a broader scale, volunteerism remains a vital pillar of German society and public safety, with the volunteer fire service protecting approximately 70 percent of the population and the Technical Relief Agency (THW) maintaining a volunteer-to-professional ratio of roughly 40 to 1.
