Germany launches experimental quantum communication network
The German federal government and the states of Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony, and Thuringia have launched an experimental quantum communication network. This initiative marks the conclusion of seven years of research under the QuNet project, which was supported by 125 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Spaceflight.
The network utilizes Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to secure communications between government agencies, businesses, and critical infrastructure providers. By using quantum technology, the system can detect eavesdropping attempts and generate encryption keys known only to the sender and receiver, providing a defense against future cyberattacks, including those from quantum computers.
Key research institutions involved in the consortium include the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light (MPL), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
