Germany launches experimental quantum communication network
Overview
Germany is advancing its quantum communication capabilities through large-scale research and infrastructure initiatives. The QuKomIn project has established an application laboratory in Erlangen to provide a testing environment for eavesdrop-proof data transmission using a hybrid fiber-optic and satellite network. This project is supported by approximately 15 million euros from the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Development and Energy.
Following seven years of research, the QuNET initiative has transitioned into an experimental quantum communication network. Funded by 125 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Spaceflight, the project involves collaboration between the federal government and the states of Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony, and Thuringia.
The network utilizes Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to secure communications between government agencies, businesses, and critical infrastructure providers. By using quantum technology, the system can detect eavesdropping attempts and generate encryption keys known only to the sender and receiver, providing a defense against future cyberattacks, including those from quantum computers.
Key research institutions involved in the consortium include the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light (MPL), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
