Germany leads baby name trend shift as Bosnia and Slovenia see similar patterns

Germany’s civil‑registry data show that the short, melodic names Sofia and Noa have held the top spots for girls for three consecutive years, while boys favor Noa followed by Mateo, Teo, Leo and Emil, with Teo and Emil posting the biggest year‑on‑year gains. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, parents in the Federation most often choose the names Merjem for girls and Hamza for boys, while in the Republic of Srpska the most common male names are Vasilije, Lazar, Luka, Stefan and Jovan and the leading female names include Milica, Sofia, Dunja, Marija and Teodora.

In Slovenia, a parallel revival of classic names is underway. The once‑popular name Marjeta, derived from the Greek Margarites meaning “pearl,” has risen to the 50th‑most common female name, with almost 5,000 women bearing it, largely concentrated in central Slovenia. Experts attribute the resurgence to parents’ desire for distinctive, historically rooted names that sound fresh today.
