Germany leads European savings vitality despite regional economic disparities
Recent studies highlight distinct trends in German savings behavior and regional economic disparities. According to a Crédit Agricole study involving 4,000 participants, Germany leads the Savings Vitality Index with a score of 56, surpassing Italy, Spain, and France. German savers are characterized by high financial reserves, an average monthly savings capacity of 733 euros—well above the European average of 617 euros—and a high degree of digital engagement and willingness to switch financial products.
However, a separate analysis by BrokerChooser reveals significant regional differences in the ability to save within Germany. Hessen is identified as the state where saving is easiest due to a combination of high incomes and relatively low fixed costs. Conversely, Berlin is the most difficult city for saving, primarily driven by high real estate prices. While Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony also face challenges, their difficulties stem from low monthly salaries rather than high living costs.
