Germany implements new Grundsicherungsgeld social welfare system
As of July 1, 2026, Germany has officially transitioned from the Bürgergeld system to a new social welfare framework known as Grundsicherungsgeld. This system, governed by the Second Social Code (SGB II), aims to provide financial security for those unable to support themselves while assisting them in returning to employment.
The new regulations introduce several significant changes, including stricter requirements for cooperation and increased sanctions for missed appointments. Asset protections have also been restructured; whereas previously up to 40,000 euros were protected, new rules implement age-based thresholds ranging from 5,000 euros for those under 20 to 15,000 euros for those over 51.
Additionally, the reform impacts housing assistance. While rent limits vary across 21 major German cities, the system continues to regulate accommodation costs under SGB II. Payments are typically disbursed by Jobcenters one calendar day before the start of the month, though bank holidays and weekends may affect specific transfer dates.
