Germany transport ministers debate new digital ticket for occasional travelers

German transport ministers are debating the introduction of a new digital ticket designed for occasional bus and train users. Proposed by North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg, the system would function via smartphone, automatically registering the start and end of journeys to calculate the most cost-effective fare. A key feature of the proposal is a monthly price cap ensuring users never pay more than the cost of a standard Deutschlandticket.

The initiative aims to model a national version after the successful eezy. nrw system in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the proposal faces significant opposition from Bavaria. Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, the current chair of the transport ministers' conference, stated that the state lacks the necessary funds for additional services and noted a lack of consensus among federal and state authorities.

The proposal includes the formation of a working group to develop a formal concept for the new ticketing system during the upcoming autumn conference in Hohenschwangau.
