German and Austrian traffic and infrastructure reports
Overview
Reports from Germany and Austria highlight various issues regarding road infrastructure, traffic regulations, and seasonal vehicle maintenance. In terms of infrastructure, specific signage such as the ‘red route’ (Rote Route) is used on congested highways to direct drivers toward large-scale detours. Additionally, technical malfunctions have been reported at the Grünauer Straße railway crossing on the Neuburger industrial track, where traffic lights are currently out of service.
Regarding traffic compliance, data from Autoclub ACE shows that approximately 24.7 percent of drivers fail to signal correctly when exiting a roundabout. Errors are even more prevalent at junctions where the priority road bends (abknickende Vorfahrt), where only about one in five drivers uses indicators correctly. Failure to signal properly in roundabouts can result in fines between 10 and 35 euros.
As temperatures drop, seasonal regulations are becoming a priority. In Austria, situational winter tire requirements are in effect from November 1 to April 15; severe failure to comply can lead to fines up to 10,000 euros. While standard fines for unsuitable tires on icy or snowy roads average around 100 euros, cases that endanger other motorists can result in much higher penalties.
In Germany, there is no general mandate, but situational requirements apply during snow, ice, or slush. Drivers face fines of approximately 60 to 80 euros and potential points on a driving license for violations. Furthermore, idling engines to defrost windshields in public spaces is prohibited under § 30 StVO and can result in an 80-euro fine. Experts recommend ensuring tires carry the ‘Alpine’ symbol to be legally recognized and checking tread depth, noting that only a fraction of tested winter tires achieve a ‘good’ rating.
