Germany loses 15,000 industrial jobs monthly amid economic concerns
Germany is experiencing a significant decline in industrial employment, with data from the Federal Employment Agency indicating a net loss of approximately 15,000 manufacturing jobs per month. Over the past twelve months, the manufacturing sector has seen a total reduction of 174,000 positions.
Economists attribute this trend to a prolonged recession and a lack of new job creation in emerging sectors such as robotics and artificial intelligence. Holger Schäfer, a labor market economist at the Institute of the German Economy in Cologne, noted that the speed of this decline is unprecedented compared to previous crises like the 2009 financial crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Political figures are raising alarms regarding the causes of this contraction. CDU Member of Parliament Johannes Volkmann has warned of a ‘China Shock 2.0,’ suggesting that Chinese overcapacity and unfair competition are driving German manufacturers out of key sectors like mechanical engineering, automotive supply, and electrical engineering. Volkmann has called for the implementation of compensatory tariffs to prevent a repeat of Germany’s previous economic dependency on Russian energy.
