Germany manages uranium mining legacy and Urenco military expansion
Germany faces significant long-term costs related to the legacy of uranium mining. According to the federal government's budget draft, the remediation and reclamation of former East German uranium mining sites managed by Wismut GmbH is expected to cost approximately 8.9 billion euros. In 2027 alone, taxpayers are projected to cover 143 million euros for these cleanup efforts in Thuringia and Saxony. Even after primary remediation is complete, ongoing monitoring and security activities will require continued funding.
Separately, the multinational corporation Urenco is expanding its operations into the military sector. The British government has requested that Urenco support the potential reconstruction of the nuclear fuel cycle at its Capenhurst site in the United Kingdom. This fuel would be intended for defense purposes, specifically for the reactors of British Vanguard-class submarines. Urenco, which is jointly owned by the UK, the Netherlands, RWE, and Eon, stated that this shift is a requirement from the British government rather than a company-led initiative.
